The story of Matt Diaz and Emily McKissick

How did you and Matt meet?

Well we are both from the same hometown, but did not meet each other officially until College up here in Denver.  We met through random friends 6 and half years ago.  After we met we didn’t talk or see each other for another 3 months and finally I tracked down his number to call him and see if he wanted to have dinner!!  We met for dinner and have been together since that day.  One interesting thing I found out was that Matt had a crush on me since 7th grade, but we had not crossed paths until after high school.

How did Matt propose to you?

I had wanted to get married to Matt about two years after we were together, but he wasn’t ready for that type of commitment so I decided to wait until he was ready.  I didn’t think it would take him another four years, but what I found out through those years is that I wasn’t as ready as I thought I was.  It was a huge growing experience for the both of us.  Within the past year our relationship had been wonderful, but the word marriage was still not in our vocabulary.  Then on April 24, 2010 a life changing event occurred.  Mat t and I were driving back to Denver from Pueblo late at night.  Matt was driving and suddenly saw something in the middle of the road.  He swerved to miss it and lost control of the car.  We then ran into a semi-truck and bounced off of the semi-truck and into the median that pinned our car down!!  The car started to smoke and Matt proceeded to pull me out of the car and carried me across the highway where we waited for the Calvary to arrive.  We were in shock that we had survived such a horrific accident.  After the accident life had looked differently for the both of us.  We faced a lot of trauma weeks after.   Three weeks after the accident Matt picked me up from the airport coming back from a vacation with friends.  It was the first time since the accident that we had been apart.  It was a lot to deal with based on the type of trauma we just faced.  We talked for about 8 hours and then so passionately he asked if I would marry him!!!  It was a perfect moment!!   He asked my dad for his permission as to which he said “yes” and then we booked a trip to Mexico to celebrate the fact that we were alive and that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together!!
